Creativity across industries
The UK Office for National Statistics has prepared information on earnings in the creative industries (Arts, entertainment and recreation) for 2021. Employees were ranked according to their employment type – full-time employees and part-time employees. The average weekly salary for full-time employees was £428 and for task workers (e.g. a performance contract) £568.
And of course there are also people whose earnings are much higher. Mostly, it depends on your knowledge and experience gained.
Whether the company is from a smaller town or a large city is also important. When serving international clients, you will certainly earn more than when creating marketing for a local company. However, there is nothing stopping you from changing jobs. A degree and experience in the creative industry will certainly help with this.
What Is The Creative Industry?
The starting point is the term ‘creativity’. In Harvard Business Essential, you can read that every human being has three components that make up creativity.
The three components of creativity:
- knowledge
- the ability to think creatively
- motivation
Components of creativity
According to the Harvard Business Essential, Knowledge represents technical expertise, intellectual qualifications and knowledge of procedures.
The ability to think creatively is defined by ways of approaching problems, i.e. explaining how flexibly and imaginatively individuals (people, company, environment) approach problems.
Motivation is divided into two types – extrinsic and intrinsic. The means of extrinsic motivation are usually monetary in the form of bonuses and promotions. In contrast, intrinsic motivation is driven by individual passion and interest, which has a greater impact on creativity than extrinsic motivation.
The Creative Industries Are A Relatively New World Market Area
The term “creative industries” emerged in the 1990s. Their multifaceted nature has the potential to become a tool in many layers of life. Already today, the media, advertising, art or fashion industries directly or indirectly affect billions of human beings. The industry influences four different aspects of the world around you.
The four main aspects of the creative industry:
- The economic aspect – trade in creative industry products is growing steadily. As a result, the sector is becoming a growing branch of global trade. Experts at Spain’s Instututo de Empresea (IE) have calculated that the creative sector accounts for 6.1% of global GDP.By country, it accounts for 2% to 7% of GDP. Globally, it is worth $4.3 trillionand exports of these goods and services are worth $646 billion,82% of which translate to developed countries.
- The cultural aspect – the creative industries combine culture and economics. On the one hand, it is a culture-creating factor. On the other, it is the way in which this culture influences society and the economy. Apple, Google, Ikea or CD Project base their success on creativity and influence the daily lives of billions of people around the world.
- Sustainability – in its conception, the creative industry is environmentally friendly. Its operation is based primarily on people and ideas, not on real estate or raw materials. Moreover, it is not dependent on heavy industry infrastructure.
- The social aspect – art students can influence society like no one else. By creating paintings, music or working in the media, they influence the perception of the world by thousands and sometimes millions of people in a country and around the world.
Contrary to IE experts, UNESCO reports that the creative sector represents 3% of the GDP of the global economy and employs around 30 million people worldwide. Trends to date suggest that the creative industries could grow by 40% by 2030, creating more than 8 million additional jobs.

The Deloitte report (2021) entitled: ‘The creative economy is a way to meet important social and cultural needs. It can provide cultural representation by showcasing diverse human experiences. It can foster social cohesion among the population as a whole or individual communities, enabling the sharing of shared narratives about the contemporary, historical or mythical world in which we live.
The creative economy is the part of the economy that tells our stories, and the creative works we leave behind as a society are likely to define how future generations understand us
The creative economy is also valuable to the extent that its link to individual creativity means that it often involves the creation of new knowledgethat will bring wider benefits through spillovers to other sectors. Creative industries often create technical innovations, particularly in the IT sector.
Creative sectors also support the diffusion of knowledge, for example through publishing. The news media in particular, but also other parts of the creative economy, can also support democratic accountability by sharing information about current events, examining institutions and questioning decision-making.
